Learn How To Install Open Eshop on Ubuntu 16.04

Open Eshop is a free and open source eCommerce software to sell digital goods, like MP3, eBooks, Movies, Software and much more. In this tutorial, we will explain how to install Open Eshop on Ubuntu 16.04.

Prerequisites

  • A fresh IT Web Services Ubuntu 16.04 server instance.
  • A sudo user.

Step 1: Getting Started

It is always a good practice to update your OS. You can do this by running the following commands:

sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Once your system is updated, restart your system and login with sudo user.

sudo shutdown -r now

Step 2: Install LAMP Server

You can install a lamp-server by just running the following command:

sudo apt-get install lamp-server^ -y

Once the installation is complete, we will need to adjust the some some values in the PHP configuration files as follow:

sudo nano /etc/php/7.0/cli/php.ini

Update the values for post_max_size, upload_max_filesize, and short_open_tag as follows:

post_max_size = 64M
upload_max_filesize = 64M
short_open_tag = On

Save and close the file when you are finished, then restart Apache web server to make this changes take effect:

sudo systemctl restart apache2

Step 3: Configure Database

Before configuring the database, you will need to secure Mysql first. You can secure it by running the mysqlsecureinstallation script:

sudo mysql_secure_installation

Answer all the questions as shown below:

Set root password? [Y/n] n
Remove anonymous users? [Y/n] y
Disallow root login remotely? [Y/n] y
Remove test database and access to it? [Y/n] y
Reload privilege tables now? [Y/n] y

Once the database is secured, login to MySQL shell with the following command:

mysql -u root -p

Enter your root password when prompt then create a database for Open Eshop:

mysql> CREATE DATABASE openeshop_db;

Next, create a database user with the following command:

mysql> CREATE USER 'openeshop' IDENTIFIED BY 'your-password';

Next, grant privileges to the database:

mysql>GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON openeshop_db.* TO 'openeshop'@'localhost';

Next, flush the privileges table with the following command:

mysql>FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Finally, exit from the MySQL shell:

MariaDB [(none)]>q

Step 4: Install Open Eshop

First, download the latest stable version of the Open Eshop installation file from their official website with the following command:

sudo mkdir /var/www/html/openeshop
cd /var/www/html/openeshop
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/open-classifieds/open-eshop/master/install-eshop.php

Next, Change the owner of the downloaded file with the following command:

sudo chown -R www-data:www:data install-eshop.php

Next, create an apache virtual host server block for Open Eshop. You can do this by creating openeshop.conf file:

sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/openeshop.conf

Add the following lines:

<VirtualHost *:80>
  ServerAdmin admin@yourdomain.com
  DocumentRoot /var/www/html/openeshop
  DirectoryIndex install-eshop.php
  ServerName yourdomain.com
  ServerAlias www.yourdomain.com
<Directory /var/www/html/openeshop/>
 Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
 AllowOverride All
 Order allow,deny
 allow from all
</Directory>
 ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/yourdomain.com-error_log
 CustomLog /var/log/apache2/yourdomain.com-access_log common
</VirtualHost>

Save and close the file when you are finished, then enable the site with the following command:

sudo a2ensite openeshop

Finally, restart Apache web server so that the changes take place:

sudo systemctl restart apache2

Finally, Open your web browser and navigate to URL http://yourdomain.com and accomplish the installation process.
